Payday lending, an issue with a reputation for triggering hard feelings and name-calling, has gone underground in the legislature.

A bill that would explicitly legalize the short-term, high-interest loans has had trouble getting an OK from the Senate's Democratic leadership. Last week, Basnight used payday lending as an example of how he and Democratic Sen. David Hoyle, one of the payday lending bill's sponsors, don't always get their way.

Willie Green, head of the state check cashers association, is hoping to get a hearing on the bill, but he doubts he'll get a law this session.

Legislators will probably repeat the pattern they've followed since 2001, Green said. That is, start the discussion, then say they don't have enough time to do anything.

"It will end up dying before the session ends," Green said.
