'Nuestro Barrio' to air Saturday

"Nuestro Barrio," a Spanish-language telenovela filmed in Durham, will hit the airwaves at 1 p.m. Saturday on WB 22.

The series is a rendering of the popular Latin soap opera format. It blends lessons on finance management and day-to-day living with melodramatic stories of enemies and lovers, tragedies and triumphs. Its creators aim to show Hispanic viewers how to conduct financial transactions assertively -- and entertain viewers, too.

The Durham-based Community Reinvestment Association of North Carolina, a nonprofit that works against predatory lending practices, and Cafe con Leche Productions collaborated on the series. Durham settings include the nightclub Montas.

The remaining episodes will air on subsequent Saturdays.
