CRA-NC
is currently working with
Nehemiah Christian Center,
an evangelical
African-American church in
Durham, to develop the
church's capacity to own shares in
publicly-held companies
and to conduct shareholder
advocacy from its
faith-based perspective.
The church is
working towards owning
shares and being engaged
directly in shareholder
advocacy by participating
in a series of workshops
that weave financial
literacy with the values
and traditions of faith
and an analysis of
economic justice.
The
workshops also educate
church members about the
process involved in filing
a shareholder resolution.
Thus, these
workshops economically
empower members of the
church and help to
promote racial and
economic justice issues
that affect their
community. In
partnership with the Duke
Community Law Clinic, CRA-NC
is also working with Nehemiah
to strengthen the
corporate governance of
its community development
corporation.
As
this project continues,
CRA-NC will continue to
work with Nehemiah and
other similar churches to
build their congregations'
capacity to engage in
shareholder advocacy work.
